Low Country Shrimp Boil Recipe

Prep Time: 20 minutes

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Servings: 6-8

Ingredients

4 quarts water
1/2 cup Old Bay seasoning (or to taste)
1 lemon, halved
1 onion, quartered
4 cloves garlic, smashed
1 pound smoked sausage (such as Andouille or Kielbasa), cut into 1-inch pieces
1 pound small red potatoes, halved
4 ears of corn, shucked and cut into thirds
2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined
Melted butter, for serving (optional)
Cocktail sauce, for serving (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the broth in a large pot by bringing 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add the Old Bay seasoning, lemon halves, quartered onion, and smashed garlic cloves. Let it boil for 5 minutes to infuse the flavors.

Add the pieces of smoked sausage and halved red potatoes to the pot. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, or until the potatoes are just tender.

Add the shucked and cut corn pieces to the pot and cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the corn is tender.

Finally, add the peeled and deveined shrimp to the pot. Cook for 3-4 minutes, or until the shrimp are pink and cooked through. Be careful not to overcook the shrimp.

Using a slotted spoon or spider strainer, transfer the cooked shrimp, sausage, potatoes, and corn to a large serving platter or directly onto a newspaper-lined table. Discard the lemon halves and onion quarters.

Serve the Low Country Shrimp Boil with melted butter and cocktail sauce on the side for dipping. Gather around the table with family and friends, and enjoy this delicious and hearty Low Country Shrimp Boil together!

This recipe captures the essence of a traditional Southern shrimp boil, perfect for casual gatherings or summer parties. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences, and feel free to add additional ingredients like crab legs or crawfish for variety.
