A Month of Infinite Possibilities

June might just be the month that represents The 100 Year Lifestyle best. In the Northern Hemisphere we celebrate the Summer Solstice on June 21, the day with the most daylight hours. We use those extra hours to get outdoors, celebrate, and explore the infinite possibilities that June, and life, have to offer. It’s the month that we can really put our 100:100 lifestyle, living at 100% for 100 years or more, into action.

Making Choices

For anyone familiar with The 100 Year Lifestyle, you know that it isn’t a sedentary lifestyle. 100:100 requires action. It involves making choices, and then acting on those choices. While choices in what you eat are part of the lifestyle, if you thought the only moves you would be making were with your fork, you were wrong.

Sedentary Activities, Sedentary Lifestyles

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), physical inactivity is a leading cause of disease and disability. In fact, the WHO states that sedentary lifestyles increase all causes of mortality, double the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and obesity, and increase the risks of colon cancer, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, lipid disorders, depression, and anxiety.

Think this doesn’t apply to you? So, just what is a sedentary lifestyle? The Sedentary Behavior Research Network defines sedentary behavior as any time a person is sitting or lying down. Think of the hours you spend driving a car, at the computer, eating, and watching TV. If you accumulate six or more hours of sedentary activities during the course of a day, without getting the recommended amount of physical exercise, you are leading a sedentary lifestyle.

By the way, if you think this only applies to adults, it doesn’t. Sadly, so many children today aren’t spending enough time playing outdoors or moving in general. They sit in classrooms, play video games, eat, and sleep. Anyone of any age can find themselves living a sedentary lifestyle.

According to the Guardian newspaper:

Around 1.4 billion adults are not physically active enough to stay healthy, says the research. One in three women and one in four men do not take enough exercise or move about enough, too often sitting at desks all day at work, in front of the TV in the evening, and traveling by car.

Time to Get Moving

Summer is here! You have no excuse. If you are, or are at risk of, leading a sedentary lifestyle, now is the perfect time to get moving. We’re not saying you have to take up a vigorous sport. Instead, find an activity that gets you up, out, and that you enjoy. Then do it! Whether it’s walking, swimming, gardening, bowling, or swinging a tennis racket or golf club, it doesn’t matter. While some sports or activities might burn more calories or use more or different muscle groups, the point is to move your body. Once you start, we guarantee you’ll love being back in the swing of things!

Your 100:100

The 100 Year Lifestyle wants you to enjoy the body you’re in for as long as possible. Take care of it and use it. If you aren’t sure how to take care of your body, or if you’ve been sedentary for so long that you are afraid to be active, enlist the help of a 100 Year Lifestyle provider to get you moving again.
